I’m 42 and a working mum of two, aged 15 and 13. I’d always wanted a better looking chin when I was younger but juggling with work, marriage and two boisterous boys left me with little time and the idea of cosmetic surgery was shelved indefinitely. Fast forward that to now, with the boys entering their teenage years and eager to cut the apron strings, I was able to squeeze out some much needed “me-time” to tend to my personal grooming. Nothing too fancy, some Botox for my frown lines and best of all, a touch of natural hyaluronic acid filler to augment my weak chin, fulfilling my teenage dream sans surgery! So far, I had it done twice in HCMC (where I’m from). The first time was pretty ok but for the second round, it was a little skewed to the left with a tiny bump which thankfully disappeared with time.

I’ve heard heaps about The Sloane Clinic – it was awarded ‘best aesthetic clinic in Singapore 2016’ by Tatler magazine and helmed by some of the best local aesthetic doctors, so you can imagine my disappointment when I found out that the flagship branch @ION was nowhere to be found during a recent work-related trip to Singapore! But as it turn out, a quick browse using the Almighty Goggle search engine pointed me to the SW1 Clinic, a sprawling one stop medical hub offering non-invasive cosmetics dermatology, cutting edge plastic surgery and medically inspired spa services all under one roof. Founded and helmed by the exact same team of beauty specialists (doctors, nurses and therapists) formerly running The Sloane Clinic, the move aimed to provide better and more comprehensive services consolidated as one large medical destination, so that one need not venture out for an un-biased take on every single aesthetics need of differing individuals.

Cocooned in soothing Millennium Pink, the SW1 Clinic offers a private sanctuary nestled in downtown Orchard Road for all your aesthetics/beauty needs

With a few hours to kill before my business lunch, I decided to seize the opportunity and popped in for an impromptu consultation to once and for all, addressed my curiosity regarding this premiere medical aesthetic provider with a plethora of accolades under her belt. You know how people say,“the best things usually happen when you least expect?”

The Beauty Gods were definitely on my side that day as I managed to score a walk-in appointment with Dr. Low Chai Ling, medical director of the SW1 Clinic due to a last minute cancellation. As the saying goes, “Never to trust a skinny chef”, Dr. Low was impeccably groomed and definitely walks the talk, looking amazingly youthful in an age appropriate way, not like mutton dressed as lamb. After registration and a short wait, I was ushered in to see Dr. Low. Even while waiting, I marveled at the thoughts given to the design of the clinic layout, offering superb privacy without engaging small, claustrophobic partitioned spaces that are commonly found in other set-ups.

It started off well as the consultation was both detailed and unhurried. Dr. Low was both engaging and knowledgeable but what strike me most was her honesty. While she correctly pointed out that I would need to refresh my chin enhancement with filler, she felt that the Botox I last did for my frown lines was still holding and I could push that back for a couple more weeks. A refreshing change indeed from my usual doctor who tend to be a little pushy and often put up a fierce sales pitch with every visit! She went on to reassure me that only FDA-approved fillers recognized by the Ministry of Health (MOH) Singapore are used, and together, we picked one that is suitable for the procedure that I was interested in.

The key to balancing out the face lies in the chin, yet it is one of the most overlooked areas

I’m not one who’s easily swayed by bells and whistles but I must say the service provided at the SW1 Clinic is pretty impressive. To begin with, a nursing assistant was assigned to each patient which is a nice personal touch as she guided me seamlessly from consultation to preparation to treatment. Besides providing answers to my many queries, she took time to explain every step taken and each product she used on my face. Dr. Low engaged the help of a blunt apparatus known as a cannula to introduce the filler where it was needed with great precision. I was told that this is a safer method, and will greatly reduce the risk of bruising as compared to the sharp needle technique for filler injection which was what I did previously back home in HCMC. Dr. Low was really meticulous and took her time to mark, inject and observe from all angles before she finally broke into a smile of satisfaction and passed me a mirror to inspect the outcome. Throughout the whole procedure, she maintained a good rapport and communicated well with me, letting me know beforehand whenever she wanted to inject/touch-up my filler to put me at ease.

The assisting nurses were always around to minimise pain with ice packs, a vibratory device and even held my hands reassuringly when they felt me tensing up at certain moments during the procedure. The soothing soft piped-in music and pleasant aromatherapy in the clinic certainly helped too!

What’s my verdict?

I’m absolutely miffed with the results which were way better than what I had seen from my past experiences with chin filler. Not only was my weak chin nicely elongated, there was a subtle but definite anterior rotation with an elegant and defined narrowing. On top of the expertise and skills of Dr. Low, the top-notched bespoke service provided definitely made me felt safe and extra pampered. It certainly didn’t cost an arm or a leg and every cent is definitely well spent considering the pleasant outcome of the whole experience and most importantly, the exceedingly satisfactory results at the end of the day!
