The year-end always comes with a wave of mixed emotions. We’re filled with the nostalgia that comes with all the memories we made. Fortunately, we’ve asked around to identify the buzziest skincare trends coming in 2023. These are a great start if you’re still unsure what to put on your New Year’s resolutions. Keep reading to find out which hacks and trends will become big next year. (Spoiler alert: we’re all too familiar with some of them!)
Chebula
2022 brought Centella asiatica to the spotlight as one of skincare’s hidden gems. Praised for its excellent anti-ageing and cell-renewing properties, Centella asiatica quickly rose to fame in the beauty aisle. But come 2023, we’re about to see another skincare underdog that has, surprisingly, been around for ages – chebula. Packed with antioxidants, the ayurvedic herb moisturises, brightens, and strengthens the skin. Also touted as the most potent anti-ageing ingredient on the market, it can reduce wrinkles, correct dark spots, and soothe inflammation. So, if you see these making the rounds in your favourite beauty stores, don’t hesitate and give it a try!
Slugging
Thanks to its massive TikTok saga, slugging has become the biggest beauty trend of 2022. So, we’re not surprised that it’s here to stay in 2023! Albeit sounding weird (and literally being named after slugs), this skincare hack is loved by many, including dermatologists! It involves slathering your entire face with petroleum jelly overnight to lock in moisture and reinforce your natural barrier. This creates a shield to prevent hydration from escaping, so you wake up with softer, smoother skin.

Simpler skincare
As we officially bid goodbye to pandemic-stricken skincare issues like maskne, so should we do our tedious skincare routines. The trend will shift to simpler routines focusing only on the essentials: cleansing, moisturising, exfoliating, and protecting. Experts also believe that multi-tasking products that treat various concerns will hit the spotlight. You may have heard of this technique before, with the monikers skinimalism, skin fasting, or skincare diet.
Looking at it closely, this trend is not so bad at all. Although we were used to layer product after product, our skin could benefit from this shift. It gives our skin time to breathe and fully absorb every ingredient, so that it can target your concerns.
Prebiotics & probiotics
Prebiotics and probiotics might be skincare’s newest buzz in 2023. They are known to help in supporting your natural barrier to protect your skin from damage. They also help balance the microbiomes on the surface of your skin, thereby preventing infections and conditions like eczema. They also maintain a healthy pH balance, which helps preserve the essential bacteria on your skin.
Psychodermatology
It’s fascinating how our brains control our entire body, even our skin issues. Skincare experts are now reeling in to acknowledge that our mental health affects our skin.
When we are anxious or stressed, our cortisol levels rise, which causes a cascade of metabolic effects. It may be due to a rise in blood sugar or insulin levels or lack of sleep. This can manifest on the skin, causing it to look dry, dull, and stressed out. Furthermore, someone with severe acne may feel more anxious or depressed about their appearance.
