At this point, we all know the basics of skincare. We know better than to skip wearing SPF or mix retinol with vitamin C. From cleansers, moisturisers, exfoliants, and serums, we have a routine and know which one goes first, after or not during the day. But here’s the real question: are you using the right amount of each skincare product? 

Turns out, the volume of product you use is just as important as what you put on your skin. Let’s break down the numbers to know how much your skin actually needs, so you can finally nip those questions in the bud.

Why is it important to only use the right amount of skincare products?

Skincare products have different weights and consistencies. While a drop of face oil may be enough for your whole face, a drop of cream isn’t. You want to ensure that you cover every crevice, so they get equal care. However, you also don’t want to overdo it and have your products cake up on your skin. Besides, using too much skincare may also damage your natural barrier as some can cause redness and irritation and make your skin much greasier than usual.

How do I know if I am using the right amount?

Here’s the thing: your skin will actually tell you if you’re doing it right. 

If you are experiencing sudden dryness, redness, and increased sensitivity, it’s a telltale sign that you’re going over the top. Heavier, thicker products (such as oils and creams) are occlusives, so too much of them may clog your pores. Another sign is if the product keeps moving around and does not absorb into the skin.

Similarly, if you don’t notice any changes to your skin, it might be because you’re using too little. While ‘less is more’ is a cardinal rule in skincare, using too little is just as wasteful. 

How much of each product do I need?

Cleanser

The amount of cleanser you need to use depends on the formulation you’re using. Usually, a nickel-sized amount would suffice, but for foam cleansers, you need one pump. If you wear makeup, it’s best to double cleanse to remove all the dirt and traces of makeup. 

Moisturiser

The rule of thumb is 2 milligrams per square centimetre of skin – but it still depends on your skin type. For normal and combination skin, a nickel-sized amount of moisturiser is okay. But for dry skin, use slightly more than a nickel size to ensure you have enough.

Toner

Toners are essential in balancing the pH level of your skin. Some people prefer to put it on a cotton pad first instead of spraying it because it tends to sting. Five to six drops are enough if you use it on a cotton pad. On the other hand, two to three spritzes would work, then gently pat on your skin. 

Serum

Serums contain more active ingredients than face creams, so be careful not to overdo them. A pea-sized amount or 2-3 drops is enough since serums also penetrate deeper than moisturisers. 

Eye Cream

When it comes to eye creams, less is definitely more. Like serums, a pea-sized amount would also suffice. And since the skin around the eyes is the most delicate, avoid rubbing vigorously.
